Directionless has been focused on creativity, particularly with music, most of his life which began in 1975. Various dates and entry points exist for a great many flirtations with both style and form.
'Officially' He has been involved in the following capacities: 1985-1990 / Saftey Kids Productions: Stage Production performed at grade schools and fairs throughout Southern California.
1987-1992 / Various Top School choirs with many competitions, styles and opportunities for: Solos, Barbershop Quartets, Duets and etc.
1995-1997 / 'The Singing Mission' Nebraska Omaha: The start of his love and practice of acoustic guitar. Plus a myriad of public performances for civic and religious events.
'Underground' He has been making demo recordings and sequencing since 1987 on various computer systems and analogue gear (father is a hobby musician and so exposure came easy, although he wasn't one for teaching other than through example. So 'D-less' only had sources of inspiration and very little to any training besides what he received in Choral music).
1988 / First multi-track recording on a Fostex 4-track cassette using Keyboard, Vocals, Guitar and Bass.
1991 / Discovery of an underground art scene most influential to D-less: The Demoscene. :)
He started sequencing game remixes sometime in the early to mid 90's. A couple can still be found in the old archives. They were nothing spectacular by even the standards of the day. But he was learning more composition and structure, and most important, how to use a seemingly non-intuitive interface in a way that allowed the creativity to flow.
1997 / Back from Nebraska, his computer sequencing intensified, but severely lacked production quality. He started focusing on acoustic multi-track recordings at this time.
1999 – 2003 / Moved to Utah to deconstruct his faith. This was also a golden time for self-exploration, particularly through the art vehicle. Many CDs worth of acoustic multi- track recordings were made as well as a couple CDs worth of collaborations with a dearly beloved music partner in acoustic exploration, Jensen Oler (RIP 02/07).
2004 - 2006 / Alcohol, work stress in the corporate office, and a booming social life cut into the music focus for a time. And yet, 7 Drunken Freestyle Hip Hop albums were produced, forever marking an era in a close circle of friend's history. ‘Masters of The Universe’ is not dead however. Just more sober and less together as a social group.
2007 to present / Fresh on the heals of sobriety, the tragic loss of a best friend, and a new baby girl (plus a redefined life concept regarding what he's willing to do for money) brings D-less to his greatest time musically. All the passion and influence goes into this and other life musings.
He spent a strong year emphasizing and educating himself on sound production, particularly with the aid of software synthesizers and powerful new Demoscene-legacy inspired sequencers. With the ear and mind this has developed, he's in the process of incorporating the years of singing and acoustic musicianship into a synthetic aural world.
Popularity doesn't concern D-less. Money certainly doesn't concern D-less. In general, the 'Rat Race' seems to him a most unpleasant disaster. He has no ambitions of ever again publicly performing, besides within the confines of random passers by and other intimate impromptu engagements. His focus is on creativity and recordings - things that can be shared across the world and archived in the digital annals of history.
He also loves being a part of the underground, together fostering a passion and drive for excellence without business emphasis. Real humans really making music for real motives. D-less is connected with artists around the world. They share and collaborate and encourage and educate beginning artists in the various networks.
Yes, D-less wants to sell albums because working a job takes time away from a true calling. Yet, the motivation of working on any art for commercial profit has been a challenge. Barring some psychological blockades, D-less is ready for whatever motivates and inspires the music pursuit. Even if that means indefinitely being a nobody in the commercial world.
